Halls Creek WA

After leaving Fitzroy Crossing, which had surprised me that it has some water and water holes in the river, as most of the creeks and rivers up here are bone dry. Now it is onto Halls Creek. Lots of bush fires has burnt all the green folage leaving a black chard bush view from the road.

The town of Halls Creek was named after a prospector in 1885 named Charlie Hall. He found a huge gold nugget weighing 870g, which is 28 troy once which is a huge gold nugget at this site on Christmas Day. The gold nugget caused a gold rush to the area, about 15,000 people came to this site called Old Halls Creek to prospect for gold. The land was harsh and inhospitable for the prospectors and the gold rush only lasted 3 months. The town became a cattle trading centre for the cattle stations of this area, a town to the aboriginal community, and the miners who stayed.

Well while at Halls Creek in the middle of nowhere we found some tourist attractions the China wall, and Caroline pool.

China wall looks man made, but mother nature created it. A quartz band of rock coming out of the mountain a couple of klms long looks like a spine to the mountain. This was a great photo opportunity. At the base of the mountain a dried up riverbed.

Onto Caroline Pool, unsealed road heavily corrigated, shook the truck and trailer around for 19klms. Arriving at this site, it is a camp area with toilet block and beautiful aboriginal artwork on the outside of the toilet block.

The landscape mountains all around with recent bushfire removing all growth stripping the land and mountain bare, leaving black ash in its place. Temps 43°c this time of year and the river bed almost dry only a very small amount of water not worth mentioning. Looks like the council is trying to line the riverbed to retain water.

Well i must say dissapointed, everything seems dry, the roads a so bad to drive on we headed back to Halls Creek.

Now time to continue our adventure an drive northward.
