Ponto Falls Reserve
Well we are here at Ponto Falls Reserve, the trip from Copeton Dam to here had some challenges by the way of the back roads and shortcuts. It was definitely an adventure in a truck and camper trailer.
The weather is fining up cold night but beautiful days. The Macquarie River which we are camped on, the river bank the river water is like glass, hardly a ripple. We have decided to stay a couple of weeks, night time campfires are great. Lots of birds, galahs, major Mitchell's, sulphur crested cockatoos, kookaburras and many other birds including ducks. Cattle grazing around the area keeping the grass mowed.
We have booked the mighty Isuzu in for its 45,00klms service for next week.
It is very green at Ponto Falls Reserve. There is three levels to camp on, we are camped at the second level as the third level is almost the river bed and has lots of rock boulders which stops tent pegs going in. The second level no such problems.
The toilet block is on the second level, lots of rubbish bins, and plenty of firewood from broken tree branches. There are plenty of cow patties also. It is peaceful and quiet when the birds are not squarking, very tranquil.
This time we setup the annex and what a difference it is a wind break as well it keeps you warmer than the outside. We don't use the annex that often but winter time it comes in handy. Plenty of sunlight for the solar panels to keep the batteries top up.
The Wellington council manages the area with the Dubbo council also setup wildlife reserves to protect the wildlife of the areas. It has good boating and kayaking access and good fishing areas, there are a few swim holes on the rapids part of the river. On the other side of the river banks are farms who also irrigate out of the river.
The morning are beautiful, birds chirping, sunrise, cows grazing a real country feel to this place.
Well the cold weather is here, BOM state up to 5 cold fronts coming through and yes it is very cold, frost most morning, high winds keeping us cold. It is hard to find a wind break outside, we put the reclining chairs at the back of the truck while the sun was out, that was nice but it has been cloudy most days and I hate being indoors. There does not seem to be much choice the diesel heater inside is great, but the winds are to gusty for campfires.
I would say welcome to Winter but it is not officially here yet and only a few weeks back, heatwaves were gripping this area, I don't know but it must be climate change or something?
