Kunenarup Memorial WA

Traveling towards the town of Ravensthorpe about 15klms outside of the town of Ravensthorpe we see a sign saying Kunenarup Memorial not really knowing what it is we investigate this site which is well laid out with Eagle wings on both sides of the entrance.

After doing some research from the signage and the internet I found out it is a memorial of what known in history as the Ravensthorpe Massacre which involved the local Aboriginal tribe called the Noongar people.

This site was established in 2015 as a memorial in recognition of the Massacre of the Noongar people which occurred in the 1880.

The story goes that the early white settlers to this area was known as the Dunn brothers. In the 1860s they built a farm by clearing an area of land and called it Cocanarup.

From what I can understand is that John Dunn one of the white settlers found an Aboriginal girl who at the time was 13yrs old, he attacked and raped her. This occurred around 1880.

In response to this act a local Aboriginal speared and killed John Dunn being their tribal punishment for such a crime.

The Aboriginal suspect of the crime faced court, but after the trail the Aboriginal suspect was acquitted of the crime.

The Dunn brothers not happy about the outcome of the trail decided to retaliated by gathering a group of armed settlers and rounding up Aborginal family's men, women and children and slaughtered them, this being known as the Ravensthorpe massacre which has gone down in history.

This was very sad, and happen to the Noongar people of the past. In recognition of this event this memorial site allows their story be told.

A pair of eagle sculptured wings mark the entrance and metal sculpture of the mallefowl are scattered throughout the walking trail about 250 metres long, it is a time to think and reflect about the past.

Local Aboriginal people words invite visitors to pause and reflect. There are covered table and chair to allow you time to reflect on past deeds and events of sorrow.

I have found the time I spend there and the information has made me reflect with a better understanding of past events.

Now I am here I will listen an breathe.
